The Office of the President has launched the 18th edition of the Piggy Bank campaign for students to donate money to the Community Chest Fund Foundation by using piggy banks spread throughout 3000 classrooms in schools around the country. This money is presented during the l-Istrina, the day after Christmas.
Charles Azzopardi from BOV said that for the second year running the piggy banks will be made of cardboard instead of plastic in order to protect the environment.
This campaign is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Education, with Permanent Secretary Dr Frank Fabri saying that students are very enthusiastic about this campaign.
The designs of the year’s piggy banks focus on the theme of “Seeking what unites us”.
President Dr George Vella said that children are the best tools in the solidarity campaign because he said that it instils in them a sense of empathy and respect towards those who are suffering. President Vella said that in this way students will realise that life is not a bed of roses and that solidarity is important in a merciful society.
Last year, students and educators collected the sum of €55,000 in this campaign. Watch the First Lady of Malta’s message to all the students, urging them to participate in the L-Istrina Bank of Valletta Piggy Bank Campaign 2021 in the video below.
