Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix back in Malta next week Apple TV+’s Napoleon epic

Joaquin Phoenix stars as Napoleon Bonaparte

After shooting White Squall in 1996 and Gladiator in 2000, Ridley Scott will return to Malta next week for the third time. The Napoleon’ epic on Apple TV+ will star Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby as Napoleon Bonaparte, the French emperor and military leader, and his wife Josephine, respectively.

Locations in Attard, Senglea, Mellieha, Siggiewi, Mdina, Valletta, Fort Ricasoli, and the Malta Film Studios will be used to film the epic. Napoleon will be available on Apple TV+ in the year 2023.

“Napoleon is a man I’ve long been fascinated by,” stated Ridley Scott. He appeared out of nowhere to dominate the world, but he was also engaged in a passionate conflict with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world in an attempt to gain her love, and when he failed, he conquered it in order to destroy her, and in the process, he destroyed himself.”

Through the eyes of his love, Josephine, the film will take a close look at the origins of this historical giant and his rise to power. Napoleon’s most famous fight, as well as his insatiable ambition and remarkable strategic intellect, will be depicted.

A feature film about the Napoleonic Wars has long been a goal of many directors, including Stanley Kubrick, who notoriously failed to make it happen. Ridley Scott is eager to seize the reins.

This year, Napoleon is the fifth production to be staged in Malta, following performances from the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Malta.
